Here's a taster of what's to come...


DRAWING – for its own sake and for a planned painting, (prep drawings) and the use of CHIAROSCURO

Using graphite pencils and white & black pencils on white and tinted paper. Using some charcoal.

Understanding tone and scale.

 

WEEK 1: LANDSCAPES - Elements of a landscape:

  • understanding distance,
  • mid-ground and
  • foreground,


Other elements include:

  • hills / mountains,
  • trees, (various types)
  • water / reflections,
  • rocks / stone
  • and clouds.


Use of earthy colours. Use of scale of man-made objects within a landscape.

How to draw mountains and various types of trees. Media and various surfaces.

Will also include a brief introduction to perspective drawing of buildings.

 

WEEK 2: DRAWING PORTRAITS - Facial and head construction,

Using graphite pencils and white & black pencils on white and tinted paper.


Elements like:

  • eyes,
  • nose,
  • mouths etc. to focus on.
  • use of shading, turning an anonymous face into a recognisable face.
  • skin tones.
  • how to draw hair and hands too within a drawing.


The importance of capturing expressions in the face:

  • Happy
  • Sad
  • Joyful
  • Worried etc.


Self-portraits using a mirror.

Different head angles too. Using Graphite pencils. And tinted pencils.

 

WEEK 3: DRAWING STILL LIFE - static observations of various objects.

Using graphite pencils and white & black pencils on white and tinted paper.

Arrangement, shading, ellipses, single objects. Natural objects from nature.

Different textures to look at and work on.


Shadows:

  • cast,
  • drop and
  • overlaying.


Different ways to shade drawing cloths / fabrics.

Distortion drawings: curved objects, mirrors etc.

Negative drawings too (white on black paper).
